SMBA Extreme Weather Event Policy

At SMBA, your child’s safety is our top priority. British Columbia’s weather can be unpredictable, so we have put clear guidelines in place to help us respond to wildfire smoke, heat, snow, heavy rain and high winds.

Here is how we make decisions and keep families informed:

How do we monitor conditions?

We check trusted sources daily, including:

  • Environment Canada alerts and forecasts
  • BC Air Quality Index and PM2.5 Readings
  • Local trail and park advisories
  • BC Wildfire Service and Emergency Management BC updates

What triggers a change or cancellation?

Condition

Action

Extreme Heat (≥ 30°C with Humidex)

Modify or cancel strenuous activities; increase hydration breaks

Snow/Ice Conditions

Cancel activities if trails are unsafe or access roads are closed

How will we communicate any changes to you?

  • We will notify families as soon as a decision has been made
  • Updates will be sent via email, WhatsApp, and Social Media

Will I get a refund for missed lessons?

  • Refunds or credits may be offered depending on the nature and duration of the disruption
  • No refunds for voluntary withdrawals unless the conditions meet our cancellation thresholds

Health Considerations

  • Children with asthma, heart conditions, or heat sensitivity may be advised to stay home
  • Our staff are trained to spot signs of heat exhaustion, smoke irritation, and cold exposure
